Implant or bridge: which is right for a missing tooth?

4 minute read. By the dentists at Sai Sharma Dental Clinic.

A missing tooth is more than a gap. Neighbouring teeth drift, the opposite tooth over-erupts and the bone under the gap slowly shrinks. Replacing it protects the rest of your mouth.

A bridge uses the teeth on either side as supports. It is quicker, usually finished in about a week, but those supporting teeth have to be shaped for crowns.

An implant replaces the root itself. It does not touch the neighbouring teeth and helps preserve the bone. It takes longer, typically a few months for healing, and costs more at the start, but it often lasts longer.

Good implant candidates have healthy gums and enough bone. Heavy smoking and uncontrolled diabetes increase the risk of failure.

The right choice depends on your teeth, health, budget and timeline. A consultation with an X-ray or scan lets us show you both options side by side.
